Ginger Girl!

The boys and I were taking Ginger to the vet to have her ears checked out. They have been bothering her for a while and so I needed to get some medicine for her. We get to the vet and Ginger had sat so nicely in the back seat between the boys' car seats which made the kids so happy since she usually sits in the front with me. Anyway, we get there and I'm getting everyone out of the car. Ginger goes to hop out of the car and sort of falls and lands on her hip with a big yelp. Dang it! So I carry her in and tell them what just happened and the vet looks her over and tells us that he wants to do x-rays to see what the damage is. I told him I want to wait to see if she's better the next day. He said that's ok and yes, she does indeed have an ear infection. She's in bad shape overnight. We can tell she's not magically better the next day so we take her in for x-rays. Well, her hip is out! We can try to get it popped back in and hope it sticks. If it doesn't fix the problem, then the next step is surgery. Yikes!! Oh, and we have to go to Tacoma to get either thing done. Luckily, we were headed to the Tacoma area the next day for Natalie's baptism, so we made it work. Amy was able to come get the kids so I could stay with Ginger at the fancy Vet clinic in Tacoma. They did a couple more x-rays and said she's a really good candidate for just popping the hip back into place and it working well since she's a smaller dog and won't have a lot of weight to support. They did that and placed hobbles on her. Hobbles look like hand cuffs on her back leg, and then she can still hobble around. She was really pitiful coming out of the anesthesia, but she's getting to be more like her old self all the time.

She'll have the hobbles for about a week and then once they come off, we still need to keep her off of stairs and from jumping on and off the couch for 4 or 5 weeks. It'll be tough, but I'm just glad she didn't have to have surgery. As much and we want to cut the hobbles off right now, we know they will help her in the long run. Here she is, hobbling around.

It must have cost a lot, or do you have that doggy insurance I see advertised?
