Lake Crescent (by Jon)

While Betsy was partying it up in Minnesota for a week, I had a small view of what life as a single parent would be like.  That first weekend was pretty busy, as I was trying to give the boys something to look forward to each day.  On Sunday we went for a long hike along the Spruce Railroad Trail, which is about 20 miles past Port Angeles.

The trail started in a heavily wooded area.  Matthew started finding leaves that were bigger than his face and had to carry them with him.  They were running at this point.

After that last picture Matthew started asking me to carry his leaves for him, since they were so heavy (he had maybe 15 huge wet leaves at this point).  We found a spot beside the trail to save his "collection".

Most of the time Sean was in front, and they were keeping a pretty good pace still.

About here the trail followed the lakeside and we saw more deciduous trees than before.

This was the boys "canoe" that they honestly wanted to take out into the lake - luckily they couldn't find any suitable paddles!  The reflection of the water was mesmerizing.

This is the bridge that crosses Devil's Punch Bowl, which apparently is a popular swimming hole.  The rock walls drop down nearly vertical, like a punch bowl I guess.

This was either an abandoned rail tunnel or mine, we didn't bring flashlights this time around so this is as close as we got.  Sean could have stayed here all day categorizing all of the different rocks.

This doesn't capture it well, but the way the sunlight was coming through the trees was awesome.

Before these shots I would run ahead to get some shots of the boys walking, but they would foil my plans and run to catch up!

Posing a midst moss covered rocks.  Not sure what Sean is trying to say with his pose.

I think these brothers like each other.

The water was so clear, you could see all the way to the bottom.
Matthew made it a point to find the same fish that we saw on our way out.

We need to print this last shot out I think.

Sean wanted this picture of him near a Madrona tree.

Matthew said this was the no peeing sign, so we made sure to follow it.

We spent maybe four hours on the trail, and no one insisted on a piggy back ride - I'll count that as a success.
