Horseshoe Curve Trip

When we found out we would be living in Pennsylvania, I asked around to see if anyone knew things to do or places to go with my kids. I have a friend (Sarah) who told me there are lots of train museums in the area. She said her grandpa used to take her to a place called Horseshoe Curve when she was younger and that it was pretty impressive. We looked it up and it's about 45 minutes from us. There is a museum there, but it's closed until the spring. Jon and I still wanted to go and let the kids see it because they think trains are pretty awesome. It had been so cold, but we decided that we would go anyway and just bundle up. We couldn't find anything to say what time trains go by, so we were just going to chance it. We packed some snacks and headed out. We got there and the thermometer on the car said it was 22 degrees outside. Ok, here we go! I was getting Matthew ready and Jon yells to me "There's a train, hurry up!"

We watched the train go about half way around the bend. The wind was blowing really hard and Matthew kept burying his face into me, so we got back into the car to watch. Here's a video of it. It's not very clear, but you can see that Matthew was mesmerized and Sean was thrilled.

Here's our blue ninja

Here's a picture I got from Wikipedia of the Curve. If you click on it to enlarge, we were parked at the red X. After the train went by, we went through the tunnel on the left side of the picture.

It was very pretty, just cold. Sean was pretty upset that we wouldn't let him explore the woods.

The tunnel was fun to go through, but we noticed long ice daggers hanging from the ceiling.

I was glad that we had a short car and none of them fell on us.

I'm sure we'll go back when it warms up a bit so the kids can hang out for a while longer and explore. Pretty neat, right?
