Butterflies

For the past few years we have raised caterpillars and watched their metamorphosis. This summer was no different, except it was really lead by Matthew. He adores caterpillars and other small creatures. We got 5 caterpillars this time and 2 completed their journey into adulthood. As they got close to emerging from their chrysalises, we watched them closely so we would be able to be there when it happened (we hadn't seen this in the years past). The first one that came out, we missed. The second one, we weren't sure was going to make it, but I saw it shaking a bit and called the boys over to watch. Sure enough, it was coming out. It was a little stuck, so I very gently held one end of the chrysalis down so it could pull itself out. We were all so excited!!

He really adores these little guys.

I let the kids hold the butterflies for a little bit before releasing them outside.

"It flew onto my shirt!!"

Sometimes they fly off right away. This one sat on our grass for a while. Matthew was happy to sit quietly and watch it stretch its wings before leaving our yard.
